GLOSSARY

Global Warming Potential

GHGs warm the Earth by absorbing energy and slowing the rate at which the energy escapes to space. The impact of each GHG is indicated by the number based on CO2. It is a measure of how much energy the emissions of 1 ton of GHG will absorb over a given period of time (e.g. 100 years), relative to the emissions of 1 ton of CO2. The impacts of methane (CH4) is 25 times and Nitrous oxide (N2O) is 298 times compared to CO2.
