The term refers to the maximum size of vessels that can transit the Panama Canal, based on the dimensions of the original locks. It applies to ships with a maximum length of 289.6 meters, a beam of 32.3 meters, and a draft of up to 12.0 meters. However, for passenger ships and container vessels, a length of up to 294.4 meters is permitted.
