WIND WHALE: Supporting Offshore Wind Supply Chains with Japan's First Coastal Deck Carrier

Project Overview

As offshore wind power projects continue to expand, the importance of logistics infrastructure has grown alongside demand for wind turbines themselves.

In July 2026, MOL Group completed the construction of WIND WHALE, Japan’s first coastal deck carrier (heavy-lift vessel).

Unlike conventional cargo vessels, WIND WHALE features a vast flush deck designed to accommodate a wide range of oversized and heavy cargo. In particular, the vessel is expected to play an important role in supporting supply chains for offshore wind power projects, where transportation demand is increasing as turbine components continue to grow.

Key Points

  •  Completion of WIND WHALE, Japan’s first coastal deck carrier (heavy-lift vessel)
  •  Vast cargo deck area equivalent to approximately 15 tennis courts
  •  New logistics infrastructure supporting transportation of large offshore wind turbine components
  •  Equipped with a Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) and battery-assisted electric propulsion system to enhance safety and environmental performance

The most distinctive feature of WIND WHALE is its expansive deck area.

The vessel measures 149.9 meters in length and 30.0 meters in breadth. Its cargo area features a flush deck, a completely flat loading surface with no protrusions, enabling the safe transportation of offshore wind components as well as various long and heavy cargoes.

Viewed from above, the scale of the vessel becomes even more apparent. The cargo deck covers an area equivalent to approximately 15 tennis courts. This extensive loading space allows efficient transportation of monopiles and other large offshore wind power components, making WIND WHALE a valuable solution for specialized marine transportation.

New Logistics Infrastructure Supporting the Offshore Wind Supply Chain

In recent years, offshore wind power projects have been advancing across Japan.

As wind turbines increase in size, safely and efficiently transporting massive components from manufacturing facilities to construction sites has become a key challenge.

Under a long-term transportation agreement with JFE Engineering Corporation, WIND WHALE is scheduled to transport foundation components, including monopiles, from manufacturing facilities to offshore wind project sites across Japan.

WIND WHALE will be operated by MOL Coastal Shipping, Ltd., with vessel management provided by MOL Drybulk Ltd.

Advanced Features for Offshore Cargo Operations

In addition to offering greater seakeeping qualities than conventional non-self-propelled barges, WIND WHALE is equipped with a Dynamic Positioning System (DPS).

This technology enables the vessel to maintain its position while operating offshore. Looking ahead, the vessel is expected to support direct cargo transfers to Wind Turbine Installation Vessels (WTIVs) working at offshore wind construction sites.

The vessel is also equipped with a battery-assisted electric propulsion system, reflecting consideration for reduced environmental impact.

Completion Ceremony Held in Nagasaki

On July 29, 2026, a completion ceremony for WIND WHALE was held in Nagasaki City, the vessel’s port of registry.

The ceremony welcomed numerous stakeholders, including representatives from Nagasaki City. Following the event, visitors were invited aboard for a vessel tour, highlighting strong interest in Japan’s first coastal deck carrier.

Supporting the Growth of the Offshore Wind Industry Through Logistics

The name WIND WHALE reflects both the vessel’s powerful transportation capabilities supporting Japan’s offshore wind industry and its image as a massive carrier navigating the open sea while transporting heavy cargo, much like a whale crossing the ocean.

The MOL Group continues to advance its offshore wind power-related businesses by leveraging extensive expertise in shipping and logistics. Through the operation of WIND WHALE, the Group seeks to contribute to the expansion of renewable energy and the realization of a more sustainable society.
