GLOSSARY

Paddle Steamer(Sidewheeler)

A paddle steamer is a vessel propelled by a steam engine that drives one or more external paddle wheels. It was one of the most important types of steam-powered ships supporting maritime transportation in the 19th century and played a significant role in the development of modern shipping. Although paddle steamers were eventually replaced by screw-propelled vessels, which offer greater efficiency and propulsion performance, they remain an enduring symbol of the mechanization of shipping and hold an important place in maritime history.
