GLOSSARY

ST

Abbreviation for Steam Turbine, which is a type of main engine used for LNG carriers. Heavy oil or natural gas is consumed in a boiler to generate steam which drives a turbine as propulsion power of the vessel. LNG carriers commonly used ST until recently as the main engine to make use of the Boil-Off Gas (BOG) generated in cargo tanks as a power source of propulsion. In case of converting an LNG carrier with ST to Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU), a diesel generator that runs on light oil has to be additionally installed to generate electricity for regasification.
